Class Experience

This is an 8-week series. Student will meet once every week.

In weeks 1-4, student will learn how to draw solid, glass and metal objects. They will complete four separate projects. The instructor will demonstrate how to depict the characteristics of the properties of each object with selective use of light and dark tonal values. Students will learn observational drawing skills in rendering solid, transparent and reflective effects. When the class progresses into weeks 4-8, students will learn the arrangement of objects in a still life composition, its balances and contrasts of line, shape, tone, color, pattern, texture and form. They will complete the multiple week project as shown.

Week 1 - practice on sphere - hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and stumbling techniques for sketching, toning and smudging for blending
Week 2 - sketch apple - solid object
Week 3 - sketch glass containers - transparent objects
Week 4 - sketch metal cup and dish - reflective objects
Week 5 - composition arrangement, use a transparent wire frame approach to sketch out the group of objects by using lines
Week 6 - finish fruits, add tones to build up three dimensional forms
Week 7 - finish metal cups, add tones
Week 8 - finish glass and ceramic bottles, add tones

Students will understand how to use lines to create shapes and forms, how to use values to contrast light and dark to add shadows and reflections of various objects. The completed still life should work on two levels: as a realistic representation of the group of objects and as a dynamic composition of visual elements, harmonizing and contrasting the use of line, shape and tone. Once they built a solid foundation and keep practicing, they will be able to re apply rules to draw a realistic still life using pencils. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment.
