Class Experience

This is an 8-week series. Class meets once every week.

This class provides training in the fundamentals of traditional Chinese brush painting, its principles, techniques, subject matters and styles. Xieyi (freehand) style will be demonstrated. Themes covered include landscapes, birds-and-flowers, fish, and others. Students are trained to master brushstrokes and taught the skills of capturing the essence of forms. This class is suitable for beginners with no prior skills. A fundamental, hands-on working knowledge of the medium and equipment will be addressed during the first class. Subsequent weeks are structured as below:

Week 1 - Intro to tools and "Autumn" Chinese calligraphy
Week 2 - Maple and Sparrows
Week 3 - Cat and Mouse
Week 4 - Goldfish and waterlily
Week 5 - Running Horse
Week 6 - Gourds and Chicks
Week 7 - Cranes and Pine
Week 8 - Squirrels and Acorns

A subsidiary objective of this class is to expose students to Mandarin in an "immersed" natural setting. Students will work on Chinese ink paintings together in partial Mandarin. They will learn new vocabularies and improve on active listening and overall language competence. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment.
