16 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. If students do not complete a task in class, they will be expected to complete that task outside of class. Students should start feeling comfortable by the 3 week to complete simple tasks on their own if they run out of time or to just practice skills on their own time.Class Experience
Everything in this course is designed to effectively help a student master the basic sewing skills of using the machine, sewing straight lines, sewing perfect corners, fixing mistakes, basic hand sewing and one project to get them experience with a zipper. Once mastery of these skills is complete, your student should feel very confident sewing any simple sewing project with ease. Week 1 - Students will be able to use their machine safely, thread their machines, troubleshoot basic threading issues, sew straight lines on the correct measurement line, sew corners and back stitch by repeated practice of these skills both on paper and on fabric. Week 2 - Students will be able to create a 'mini-bag' by demonstrating their ability to use a pattern, pin, cut and sew fabric. Week 3 - Students will be able to create a microwavable rice bag by demonstrating their ability to use a pattern, pin, cut, and sew fabric both by machine and by hand. Week 4 - Students will be able to create a rolled pencil case by demonstrating all previous skills and learning how to quilt through several layers of fabric. Week 5 - Students will be able to create a travel pocket pillow by demonstrating all previous skills and creating a hem, handle, and hand sewing a ladder stitch. Week 6 - Students will be able to create a banner and hand sew on applique by choosing a style and theme and making it. Week 7 - Students will be able to create a zippered supply pouch by practicing how to attach a zipper. Week 8 - Students will choose their final project to review and practice the skills they've learned while challenging themselves to learn 1 or 2 more beyond what was practiced in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My passion for sewing goes hand in hand with teaching. Helping others learn the art of sewing either as a hobby or future career is my goal. I teach ages 7+ beginner classes, starting with threading a machine and building techniques to work toward sewing Independence through projects and samples. I have several private students who work on intermediate and advanced protects.
I previously taught high school sewing and fashion design for 7 years before stepping away to be a stay at home mom. I still love to share knowledge with others so teaching on Outschool has been a perfect fit
I believe people learn best through experience so my classes are project based. Each project has specific techniques that we will focus on mastering that can applied to future projects. Some projects require a prerequisite course to ensure specific knowledge is acquired for success.
A fun side note- Although I continue to teach, I also do custom clothing and alterations on the side. I've created fun costumes like Princess Peach and Princess Jasmine dresses and even a Zelda recreation!
