Class Experience

US Grade 7
This course is the 1st semester of an entire school year course (see syllabus below). Prior to this course students should have some experience in adding, subtraction, multiplication, and division whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. They should also have some exposure to basic geometry such as perimeter, area, and angles.

Class Structure - I provide each student with their own copy of a Google Slides presentation. This is where they will complete their work during class and homework. Students must have a google account that is not locked (ie: most school accounts) to use the slides. We will occasionally have brain breaks with games or videos, and sometimes even play Kahoots! Every class begins with a few minutes of socialization/getting to know each other. Then I teach a math skill, model the skill, and let the students practice the skill. Grades can be given based on participation, if requested by parents. I do not give grades based on work completed because I do not believe in allow students t get the wrong answer. We will continue working on every problem together until all students find the correct answer, even on quizzes.

Teaching Style - My teaching style is relaxed and fun. I want the students to be comfortable in my class. I believe that when a student is comfortable and having fun with the teach, they learn the best. I want to foster my students' confidence in their
math abilities.

Hello, my name is Shanin Hamilton. I am a mom of 3 kids 29, 27, and 18. I have lived on a small, hobby farm most of my life, since 1980, and we have had almost all of the different farm animals at some point. I homeschooled my oldest two kids from primary school thru high school graduation, greatest experience ever! I was a Girl Scout Leader for almost 20 years and have led hundreds of girls and other Leaders. I am also a trained K-8 teacher and have worked with students from 2 years old to 18 years old in both regular education and special education.

I have a Bachelor of Art in K-8 Interdisciplinary Studies. I have worked with students, ages 2 - 18, in multiple different settings including public schools, private daycares, Girl Scouts, and homeschooling my own children from primary school through high school graduation. I have worked as a Teachers' Aid in a 6-8th grade building in all core classes including 6-8th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geography, Civics, Life Science, and ELA. As a Teacher's Aid, my job was to pull small groups of students and reteach the concepts that were taught by the teacher, but in a easier to understand way for the students that struggled with the concepts. I also worked closely with the teachers to develop class curriculum for both the whole class and for struggling learners. I have over 10 years of experience working with children with both special learning and behavioral needs in a public classroom setting.

My style of teaching is being flexible and fun. That means I let the students’ enthusiasm in the subject drive the lessons, because I believe that kids learn best when they enjoy the topic and can be engaged. I use lots of pictures, slides, games, and student driven discussions.

The classes that I offer are the core math, science, and language arts as well as some creative writing, online tools and organization classes.

I hope to see you, or your child, in my classroom soon! Have a marvelous day.
