With a focus on one book per month, this five-month course will have discussions about the following works and their major themes: Stardust by Neil Gaiman (January, Weeks 1-4), Major Themes: Freedom, Love,...

As a former journalist, PhD student working on completing a dissertation, and a lifelong, avid reader, I look forward to sharing my expertise and passion with my students!
Reading assignments will be assigned for each class, where students will be expected to read independently in order to be prepared for the next class, the discussion, and any activities. Students may choose to study for their assessments at the end of each book if they choose. Students will also need to complete their writing assignments outside of class time. Students will need to submit their homework assignments and tests as a document (either Word, Google Doc or PDF), so please make sure they have access to one of these programs and are familiar with how to create, save, and upload a document into Outschool.
Students will need to have their own copy of the following books for this course: Stardust by Neil Gaiman I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain The Giver by Lois Lowry
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessments will be given individually during class time at the end of each book. These assessments will be multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer combination assessments resulting in a letter grade. These letter grades will add up to a cumulative course grade at the end of the semester. Students will also be graded on their writing assignments using a three-point scale. Grades will either be Exceptional, Satisfactory, or Needs Improvement, and students will receive individual, private messages with feedback on their writing assignments.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
