In this five week literature book course, students will read, analyze, and write about the play "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Class experience

This class is taught in English.
Academic: The student will learn the literary elements of the drama genre, text specific vocabulary, and information about WWII.
Life Skills: The student will gain experience meeting assignment deadlines, participating in a group, taking turns, and expressing empathy.
The Holocaust is a sensitive topic. I've taught this play over the course of four years and feel it is the best way to introduce sensitive students to this infamous event in history. All of the events covered in the play occur before the Franks are taken to a camp. I also feel that the play is appropriate for students who are already knowledgeable about the Holocaust. These students have time during our class to connect with Anne and to express empathy for those who became victims of war.
Students must purchase a copy of /The Diary of Anne Frank/ dramatized by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Some copies are available on Amazon, but be sure to get the printing from www.snowballpublishing.com and NOT the revised addition by Wendy Kesselman.

Students will need to use a computer that has Power Point.

Students will need to download the free app "Kahoot."
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Pictures of Anne's family and the secret annex will be shown to students. The Holocaust will be discussed and is troubling to some students. No pictures of concentration camps or victims of such camps will be shown.
Students must purchase a copy of /The Diary of Anne Frank/ dramatized by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Some copies are available on Amazon, but be sure to get the printing from www.snowballpublishing.com and NOT the revised addition by Wendy Kesselman.

Students will also need to download the free app "Kahoot" to play review game challenges. I recommend the student play on a smart phone while taking class, rather than trying to move back and forth between screens on their class computer.

Hello!
I love teaching grammar and composition skills to students of all ages. When I'm not helping students write more effectively, I'm hosting book groups and book-related programs. I've worked as an elementary, middle school, and high school...
