US Grade 6
In this six week course, we will review the most important elementary math concepts that students need for success in sixth grade math. We will build on those concepts as we preview the most essential sixth grade math standards. This is a great course to keep your learner engaged and prevent learning loss over the summer. The topics that we will cover are: Week 1: We will prepare to work with fractions by reviewing factors and multiples. Learners will find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a number. We will also learn divisibility rules that make math easier. We will use our understanding of factors and multiples to compare and simplify fractions. We will convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Week 2: We will learn to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers using a common denominator. We will learn to multiply and divide fractions using models and algorithms. Week 3: We will learn to add, subtract and multiply decimals. We will discuss the importance of place value in decimal operations. Students will learn to simplify algebraic expressions Week 4: Students will learn to use inverse operations to solve one-step equations. We will learn to find equivalent ratios and use unit rates to make comparisons.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
- list factors and multiples of a number
- find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a number
- convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions
- add and subtract whole numbers and fractions
- multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions
- solve equations with one variable using inverse operations
- use proportional reasoning to compare ratios and rates
