Ratios and Proportional Relationships
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Percent
Understand percent. Convert between percent, decimals, and fractions.
Lesson 2
Percent & Review
Use multiplication and division to solve real-world and mathematical problems involving percent.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Ratios & Proportions
Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b is not equal to 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.
Lesson 4
Unit rates, ratios, and percent in the real-world*Q
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations. *Quiz.
Unit 2Measurement
4 lessons2 Weeks
Measurement
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Customary measurement
Convert among different-sized standard customary measurement units, and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real-world problems.
Lesson 6
Metric measurement
Convert among different-sized standard metric measurement units, and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real-world problems.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Temperature
Read thermometers and estimate temperatures in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Convert between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Lesson 8
Compare and convert measurement
Convert between metric and customary units, and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real-world problems.
Unit 3Statistics
8 lessons4 Weeks
Statistics
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Measures of central tendency
Identify, calculate, and interpret the minimum, maximum, mean, median, mode, range & outliers of a data set.
Lesson 10
Measures of variation
Identify, calculate, and interpret the interquartile range and mean absolute deviation of a data set.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Classify data
Classify and interpret data and judge its validity.
Lesson 12
Sampling
Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences.
 Week 7
Lesson 13
Graphs Part 1
Create, interpret, and identify different graphical displays: Line & dot plots & graphs
Lesson 14
Graphs Part 2
Create, interpret, and identify different graphical displays: Histograms & bar graphs
 Week 8
Lesson 15
Graphs Part 3
Create, interpret, and identify different graphical displays: Box plots, Stem & Leaf plots, & Pie charts
Lesson 16
Graphs and distribution
Create, interpret, and identify different graphical displays: scatter plots. Compare different graphical displays and their distributions. Use these graphs to draw conclusions and answer real-world questions.
Students will develop an understanding of statistical variability. Students will summarize and describe distributions. Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
Homework Offered
I will provide 5-10 example problems for homework after each class. This is voluntary and will be reviewed at the beginning of the next class. If a student is struggling, they can post their concerns on the classroom wall for more clarification. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per assignment.
Assessments Offered
I will assess students in class based on their participation and homework (if they do their homework). Students will also have occasional quizzes. I can also provide a progress report at the end of the course. Please let me know if you would like a letter grade for this class.
Grades Offered
Students need to have taken 5th grade math or have been tested on a 6th grade level.
Students should have a math journal to keep their notes in and solve example problems. A printer would be beneficial for notes, but is not required.
