I will provide 5-10 example problems for homework after each class. This is voluntary and will be reviewed at the beginning of the next class. If a student is struggling, they can post their concerns on the classroom wall for more clarification. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per assignment.Assessment
I will assess students in class based on their participation and homework (if they do their homework). Students will also have occasional quizzes. I can also provide a progress report at the end of the course. Please let me know if you would like a letter grade for this class.Grading

US Grade 6
This class is interactive, where I will break concepts down and check for understanding throughout the class. I scaffold and adjust my pacing to suit the needs of the students. I will use visuals, mnemonics, real-world examples, discussion, guided notes, and games to ensure a deep understanding. Student participation is expected. I strive to make learning fun and instill confidence in the student. My classroom is more than a place to learn conversions and formulas; it is a safe, supportive environment where students learn communication, social, and problem-solving skills. Every child can succeed with guidance and encouragement. The teacher’s job is to establish a positive and productive learning environment, engaging and differentiated instruction, and a professional relationship with students and parents. I use the “I do, We do, You do” model to encourage retention and build confidence. After teaching a concept, I will explain a real-world example, guide the students in solving a problem, and then let them solve one independently to ensure they understand the concept. Each class will begin with a 5-minute breakdown of the previous class’s homework. This is to make sure that everyone retained the lesson and can complete the assignment without help. At 25 minutes into class, we will have a 5-minute brain break where the students can do a physical activity, math riddle, or go to the bathroom. I do not drill. If students want extra practice, I can recommend books, websites, and provide more exercises. The focus of this class is a deep understanding of the curriculum and the confidence that it instills. This course will cover the third quarter of a 6th grade curriculum. Specifically, these 16 classes include the Common Core State Standards 6.RP.1 – 6.RP.3 (Ratios & Proportional Relationships) and 6.SP.1 – 6.SP.5 (Statistics & Probability). Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. Students will develop an understanding of statistical variability. Students will summarize and describe distributions. Students need to have taken 5th grade math or have been tested on a 6th grade level. We will review 5th grade concepts to build on. We will have class twice a week for eight weeks. The following is our tentative schedule for the third quarter: Week 1: Percentages Week 2: Ratios, proportions, and unit rates Week 3: Customary and metric measurement Week 4: Temperature. Compare and convert measurement Week 5: Mean, median, mode, interquartile range, & mean absolute deviation Week 6: Classify data & sampling. Recognize a statistical question. Week 7: Data presentation: Line & dot plots & graphs. Histograms & bar graphs Week 8: Data presentation: Box and stem & leaf plots & pie charts. Center, spread, & overall shape of data *Please note that if there are not at least three students enrolled, I will have to cancel or postpone the class.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of statistical variability. Students will summarize and describe distributions. Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
