This 8-week, 3 days per week course will teach sixth grade English language arts, following national standards, for the fourth quarter. We will strengthen skills in reading, spelling, punctuation, and grammar while exploring writing styles.
Class experience
In this 8-week course, we will partner to learn sixth grade level ELA (English Language Arts) concepts corresponding to national standards. It will help your student strengthen skills in reading, spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and explore writing styles and creative expression. Students will learn to use a variety of complete sentences: simple, compound, and complex. Students will learn parts of a sentence through sentence diagramming. Students will learn reading comprehension skills. Students will learn to answer reading comprehension questions with short essays. Students will practice class discussion and collaboration skills. Students will learn to analyze texts for conclusions and inferences, predictions, cause and effect, and other story elements. Students will learn to plan, write, revise and edit a narrative writing piece and a five-paragraph essay. Students will learn creative writing techniques. Students will learn research techniques. Students will learn new vocabulary. Students will learn to decode unfamiliar words with suffixes and prefixes. Students will learn to incorporate their skills in real-world applications such as editing texts and completing writing projects.
As the newly published author of the "Emotebook" and a freelance writer for over 20 years, I have relied on language arts skills as the building blocks of a happy career. For three of those years, I also worked full-time as an associate editor, which helped me gain real-world expertise in the nuances of English language arts. I am walking the language arts journey with my three children while homeschooling them, as well as with several other students in various grades.
