6th Grade English Language Arts: Semester A, 2x weekly

In this 2x per week, thirteen week class, students will read the books "Freak the Mighty" and "Fish in a Tree," participating in discussions with peers and completing reading, writing, and vocabulary activities with in-class support.

Class Experience

I am a New York State certified classroom teacher, certified in English Language Arts and Students with Disabilities.
I have over 12 years of classroom teaching experience.
Students will have assigned reading to complete independently each week (please see the class description for specific pages). They will complete some activities each week independently, including questions about the reading, vocabulary activities, and writing assignments.
Hard copy or digital copy of two novels: "Freak the Mighty" (by R.J. Palacio) and "Fish in a Tree" (by Lynda Mallaly Hunt) Printables and downloadables as posted weekly in the Classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Each student will be given feedback on assignments they submit in a timely manner, as well as a written report at the end of the class. 
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
In Esperanza Rising, the main character's father is killed, and her uncle tries to pressure her mother into marrying him. He burns their house down, and they decide to move to the US to work as migrant workers. The book discusses social status and poor working conditions for migrant workers. 

In A Long Walk to Water, there are many references to guns and war violence, as well as separation and loss of family members. There are also animal-related deaths.
