US Grade 6 - 8
In this 4-week, twice a week class, students will learn and practice close reading and analysis skills needed for Informational Texts in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through lecture, guided discussion, and group and individual practice. This class will provide direct reading, analysis, and writing instruction in relation to Informational text in STEM. As a class, students will work through the process of reading, analyzing, brainstorming, organizing, writing, and editing written responses to the texts they read. As part of this process, students will submit a piece of writing using responsive writing on a text that serves a specific purpose and addresses a particular audience. Week 1 - Lesson 1 - Guided Reading & Annotating Practice - pt 1 Week 1 - Lesson 2 - Guided Reading & Annotating Practice- pt 2 Week 2 - Lesson 1 - Collaborative Practice, Reading, and Annotating - Images - pt. 1 Week 2 - Lesson 2 - Collaborative Practice, Reading, and Annotating - Images - pt. 2 Week 3 - Lesson 1 - Independent Practice, Reading, and Annotating - pt. 1 Week 3 - Lesson 2 - Independent Practice, Reading, and Annotating - pt. 2 Week 4 - Lesson 1 - Synthesis Questions - pt. 1 Week 4 - Lesson 2 - Synthesis Questions - pt. 2 The Final Synthesis Questions Writing will be a final assignment due via "Conversation" and will be scored within 48 hours using the scoring Rubric and feedback.
Learning Goals
Students will understand the various strategies for successful close reading of Informational STEM texts and will write a synthesis essay at the end of class to demonstrate understanding for a writing score and feedback.
