Homework
2-4 hours per week. The homework will be to practice the exercises we learned and the music we worked on. As a rough guideline, I would recommend you work on the exercises for 10-20 minutes a day for at least 4 days a week, and work on the music itself for about 20 minutes per song for 4 days a week. You should always do a 3-5 minute cool down after any practice session (I will show you how to do this in the first lesson). *** This will vary based on factors like how difficult your songs are for you or how many exercises I gave you. If you are unsure how much time you should take, ask me at the end of your lesson and I’ll give you some more specific guidelines for the week.Class Experience
In this weekly private lesson, you will improve your skills, confidence, and identity as a singer. Whether you’re a complete beginner, somewhat experienced, or an expert looking for some coaching, I will work with you one on one and personalize each lesson to your own goals and needs. Starting with the basics (or whatever level of experience you have) and advancing as we go, you will learn how to: warm up and cool down the voice, practice technique on your own, develop your personal style, choose songs to sing, and make each song truly your own. After quickly talking about our goals, we will begin the lesson by warming up the voice using hums, trills, scales, and breath exercises. Each week we will work on a song of your choice and practice applying technique and expression to it. Throughout the lesson I will give you personalized feedback and guide you to find ways to work with the challenging areas of the voice. I am generous with positive feedback since I believe the voice needs a supportive environment to thrive. My ultimate goal is for you to be able to feel comfortable performing and bringing your own artistic style to any music you sing. No prior experience required! What will you need to start? - Come to your first lesson with a song prepared and a rehearsal/instrumental track to sing to - When you enroll in the class, tell me the name of the song and who the composer is - If you have a pdf of the sheet music on hand, it would be helpful for me to have a copy - A notebook or note-taking app to use during lessons - When you enroll, tell me a little bit about yourself as a singer! If you aren’t seeing a time that works for you, send me a message and I’ll find a time that we’re both available. This class is also available in a 30 minute lesson.
Learning Goals
You will learn:
How to warm up and cool down the voice
Exercises to develop your technique
Proper breathing and diction
How to use your registers (chest voice, head voice/falsetto, and mixed voice)
How to find music that suits you and will help you grow as a singer
How to make each song your own (instead of imitating another singer’s performance)
Over the course of the lessons, I will also put an emphasis on helping you develop your own personal singing style.
