Homework
2-4 hours per week. There will be no official homework assignments like in school, but I will need you to practice working in your DAW in between lessons. As I get to know you as a musician, I will tell you what to work on for each lesson.

Class Experience

In this weekly private lesson, you will develop your skills, confidence, and creativity as a music producer. Whether you’re a complete beginner, somewhat experienced, or an expert looking for some coaching, I will personalize each lesson and work with you one-on-one based on your own goals and needs. Starting with the basics (or whatever level of experience you have) and advancing as we go, you will learn to: write music, record, properly combine instruments, mix/master audio, and develop your own style as a musician.

Each lesson we will work on producing one of your own songs and I will coach you through new techniques you can use to improve it. Throughout the lesson, I will give you personalized feedback and guide you to work through the challenging parts of creating a song. Whether you are starting entirely from scratch or bringing in a project you have already started, I will help you take your musical skills to the next level. I am generous with positive feedback since I believe musicians need a safe and supporting environment to thrive. When learning something entirely new, I may teach a short lesson to explain the topic, but almost all of our time will be spent learning by doing. My ultimate goal is for you to feel comfortable experimenting with different techniques and to develop your own style as a musician.

What do you need to get started?
- A love for music and a willingness to learn
- You will need a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that you can access on your computer. There are a variety of free and paid options, here are my recommendations.
     - Bandlab is my top recommendation. It is free, very beginner friendly, and has an abundance of capabilities for any genre of music. It is available as both an app for your computer, smartphone, or tablet, and online at www.bandlab.com.
     - Garageband is a popular DAW. It is free and easy to understand for beginners. I recommend this for a student who plans to record most of their music live (i.e. if you are in a garage band, Garageband is for you!). It is available as an app for your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
     - Noteflight is a great tool for a classical composer. It is free, user-friendly, and presents your music as it would appear on a printed sheet. You must be able to read music to use this DAW. Noteflight does not include a mixer as this is not typically needed in classical music; if you want to learn audio engineering skills, I will teach you another software alongside Noteflight. It is available as an app for your computer, or online at www.noteflight.com.
     - FL Studio Mobile is a slightly more advanced paid tool for a student who already has experience and wants to try something more challenging. This option imitates professional software and is great for doing a deep-dive into audio engineering and sound design, and it works best with electronic genres. It is available as an app for your computer or smartphone/tablet for $19.99 (at the time I am posting this).

This class is also available in 60 minute lessons.

Hi! I’m Mr. Bennett. I am a voice teacher, music production teacher, and more than anything a music theory nerd who’s passionate about education. I draw upon 10 years of formal study in vocal performance and music theory. As a musician who has experience with styles ranging all the way from Baroque choral music to EDM and back again, I believe that learning foundational skills gives us the versatility and freedom to work across all genres holistically. My philosophy is that we all have our own unique musical identities, my mission is to help you find and own yours.
