In this class, students will be practicing how to draw fully clothed figures from the very basics onward. We will build the body from simple shapes, and use those simple shapes to pose the body however we want! These skills will help all students interested in drawing, character design, animation, cartoons, and everything in between! I will be drawing along with students in real time and checking in on their work so I can offer helpful advice and critiques face to face. I will be sharing my screen so students can use my drawings as reference as we go. In the first class, we will practice how to break down the whole figure. We will use our simple shapes to build a full body and practice various poses. In the second week, we will practice heads and faces in various directions. In the third week, we will practice hair of various lengths and textures. In the fourth week, we will practice hands in various poses. In the fifth week, we will practice drawing different body types. Finally, in the sixth week, we will add shading and highlights to make our figures look 3D! We will use references from trusted figure drawing reference sites and images from media. All subjects will be fully clothed at all times. Beginners welcome and encouraged! If you can draw the human body, you can draw anything!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their skills in drawing all details of the human body! Hands, hair, faces, clothes, and proportions! We will also learn how to build 3D shapes by shading with our pencils.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
No content will be upsetting for learners. All figures will be fully clothed throughout the course.
Supply List
A pencil, paper, and eraser are all that is required! I will be drawing on Procreate on the iPad, which can accurate simulate pencil and paper. This way, my drawings are more visible to learners if I draw lightly.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Science from University of Dundee
Hiya! I'm Stacy! I love all things art and animation! I'm a huge cartoon and anime fan, and love to share my passion with my students!
I have been teaching drawing, digital painting, and animation online since 2020, and have had over 50 long-term private students! I have also been a freelance artist and animator since graduating with my Master's in Medical Art in 2019.
One of my most important values in teaching is to build students' confidence in themselves. Especially in art, people can be so hard on themselves! I will always encourage my students to do their best, and allow themselves some grace when trying something new for the first time. Self-confidence and self-love is important! That's why I take extra special care to pay attention to the way we talk to ourselves in class. We encourage each other and take pride in the things we succeed in! But, we also forgive ourselves and persevere in the things it takes us more than one try to master.
