Description For six weeks, learners will meet twice a week to develop 4th and 5th grade reading, grammar, and writing fundamentals. Students will build reading comprehension, vocabulary, and understanding of the writing process, as well as how to become independent readers and writers. Learners will work on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary while reading and writing. They'll learn to identify the subject, describe people and surroundings, make conclusions from the text, and compare...
Learning Goals include: Composition- Students compose and share an opinion piece to learn writing as a process (from planning to publishing). Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics- Through sentence analysis, students will have a better understanding of sentence structure, parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and usage. Vocabulary- Students build and enhance their vocabulary by using context and word relationships. Spelling- Students are able to distinguish base words and roots in related terms, as well as sound-symbol correlations and spelling patterns. Reading- Comprehension Strategies, Literary Response, Recognize different genres and Analyze characters Word Study Skills- Using synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homonyms, etc.
As an elementary school teacher for nearly 25 years, I've taught a wide range of subjects and grade levels including several years as a combination 4th/5th-grade teacher. During this time, in planning to meet the needs of all students, I found that teaching reading, writing, and grammar at the 4th and 5th grade level was not much different, and could easily be taught simultaneously.
