Beginner Level
In this lesson the students will use the order of operations (parenthesis, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract) to evaluate numerical expressions. An important question that will be asked is, "In what order must operations be evaluated to find the answer to the problem. The vocabulary words evaluate and order of operations will be defined and discussed on the Zoom whiteboard. During the lesson I will model how to solve problems using PEMDS on the Zoom Whiteboard using the I do, we do, you do strategy. I will model examples showing students how to solve everything in the parenthesis first, then exponents. Then multiply and divide in order from left to right. Then add or subtract in order from left to right. Students will be given opportunities to solve problems using PEMDAS to show understanding of the skill. For this lesson, students should know the multiplication facts. We will be multiplying and dividing numbers. Students in this class should know the basic multiplication and division facts.
