Class Experience

US Grade 5
This is a review class where I'll go over major Grade 5 Math topics. Prerequisites: students need to have completed my 5th Grade Full-Year Ongoing Math class or be proficient in 5th grade level math or possess a solid math foundation (e.g. proficient with PEMDAS, arithmetic, and fractions handling) to get through this review class smoothly. This class will meet twice a week. In the first class I will have everyone introduce themselves, then I will tell everyone how the class will operate and what my expectations are. There is optional homework assigned each week. Optional Homework and the answer keys to the homework will be posted in the Outschool Classroom. Optional Homework will be posted as a PDF.

We will be using a website ‘Classkick’ for our classes. You will not need to sign up for an account. I will provide a link at the beginning of each class. When you click on the link, it will ask you to put in a name. You will only need to put in the students first name so that I can identify their work. Classkick is an interactive site where students can work on their math problems on the screen and at the same time, I (the teacher) will be able to see what they are doing on their end on my own screen. Each class assignment is a PDF that is uploaded into Classkick. We will not be watching any videos or using any reference websites during class. To be Coppa Compliant, the class assignment will only be accessible during our class. Once the class ends, you will no longer have access to the lesson. I will post a PDF of the answers to the problems we do in class in the Outschool Classroom for students who want to review the work. I post the answer keys at the end of each week. Sometimes, we will use Kahoot or Blooket to play games on the topic we are doing in class (if time permits). You will not need to sign up for an account with Kahoot or Blooket.

This is not a graded class but I will be providing optional homework after each class for those who want/need extra practice. Optional homework assignments will be posted in the Outschool Classroom once a week. I will post the assignments and the answers keys so you can check your work when you are done with the assignments. Please feel free to message me on Outschool Messages at any time with questions about the optional homework or any topics we cover in class so that you don’t fall behind. The optional homework will be in the form of a PDF. You will need to print it, do the work, and check your answers with the provided answer keys. There are no tests in this class. No grades will be provided. Optional homework is highly recommended for you to master the topics learned in class.

My teaching style is a positive form of "I teach, perform guided practice, and enable independent practice." I encourage questions from students. I go through example math problems via slides in a step by step manner, providing explanations as needed. Then I will ask students to demonstrate their knowledge by having them solve given math problems and providing guiding questions to push them forward. With repetition, students will grasp the concept. I check for understanding in a constructive manner. I go around the room, asking each student to answer a problem and to provide explanations for their solution. This helps them develop their critical thinking skills.
