Our small group math classes with licensed, expert math teachers not only support your learner in mastering their math skills, they also:
    ✔️support your learner in building an "I can do this" mindset with math
    ✔️build your learner's confidence with their math skills
    ✔️show your learner that math and problem solving can be fun
    ✔️introduce your learner to ways of thinking about numbers and problem solving that 
         they've never seen before

In this course, we will review 5th math standards through direct instruction, guided practice, problem solving, games, projects, and Number Talks. This course is ideal for students who have just completed 5th grade and want to strengthen their skills before moving on to 6th, or for higher achieving students entering 5th grade who want to get a jump start on their 5th grade math skills.


🎉Each week has a fun theme to give this camp a true, summer camp feel. 
        ⛑️Week 1 "Wear your favorite hat to class" 
        🧸Week 2 "Bring your favorite stuffed animal to class"
        🎮Week 3 "Game On: We'll begin class with a fun game"

....and more...for all 8 weeks! Our learners LOVE this aspect of our summer camps!

I will also assign optional assignments, worksheets, print and play games, and digital games  after each lesson which support the skills we are learning.


The class will be structured as follows:
👩🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏾 (2 minutes) Community Building: "Would you Rather" or "Thumbs Up If" Icebreakers
🏃‍♂️ (3 minutes) Jump Start: Get our brains ready to work with Esti-mysteries, Which One Doesn't Belong, Number Talks, or math version of Two Truths and a Lie
👩‍🏫 (15 minutes) Mini-Lesson: I will present a short lesson for the skill(s) of the day using Google Slides, Video Clips and Modeling.
📝 (20 minutes) Guided and Independent Practice: Learners will work independently and with me to practice and master the skill(s) of the day.
✅ (5 minutes) Assessment and Fluency Work: I will check in to see where each learner is with the skill(s) of the day and students will get started on their multiplication and division fact fluency work if they need additional practice. 



The weekly breakdown of skills include:
🎲 Week One: Place Value
-Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
-Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. 

🚀 Week Two: Numerical Expressions
-Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
-Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.

🔎 Week Three: Multiplication
-Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
-Multiply decimals to hundredths

📒 Week Four: Division
-Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors
-divide decimals to hundredths

🧩 Week Five: Decimals
-Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths
-Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place

✏ Week Six: Fractions
-Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) 
-Multiply and divide fractions

📐 Week Seven: Measurement and Data
-Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8)
-Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m)

❇ Week Eight: Geometry
-Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement
-Plotting points on a coordinate grid

Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching.
