π‘We make math make sense!π‘ In this course, we will review 5th math standards through direct instruction, guided practice, problem solving, games, projects, and Number Talks. This course is ideal for students who have just completed 5th grade and want to strengthen their skills before moving on to 6th, or for higher achieving students entering 5th grade who want to get a jump start on their 5th grade math skills. πLeaves of Learning Academy is rated "Popular" by Outschool because we are in the top 10% of all teachers on Outschool. This means we offer classes that are in high demand that fill up quickly! π In this course, we will review 5th math standards through direct instruction, guided practice, problem solving, games, projects, and Number Talks. This course is ideal for students who have just completed 5th grade and want to strengthen their skills before moving on to 6th, or for higher achieving students entering 5th grade who want to get a jump start on their 5th grade math skills. This course will be a combination of: β’ Direct Instruction β’ Independent Practice β’ Problem Solving β’ Critical Thinking β’ Building Number Sense β’ Interactive Games β’ Solving Digital Estimation Mysteries β’ Number Talks β’ Learning Strategies to be Flexible with Numbers The class will be structured as follows: π©πΌβπ€βπ§πΎ (2 minutes) Community Building: "Would you Rather" or "Thumbs Up If" Icebreakers πββοΈ (3 minutes) Jump Start: Get our brains ready to work with Esti-mysteries, Which One Doesn't Belong, Number Talks, or math version of Two Truths and a Lie π©βπ« (15 minutes) Mini-Lesson: I will present a short lesson for the skill(s) of the day using Google Slides, Video Clips and Modeling. π (20 minutes) Guided and Independent Practice: Learners will work independently and with me to practice and master the skill(s) of the day. β (5 minutes) Assessment and Fluency Work: I will check in to see where each learner is with the skill(s) of the day and students will get started on their multiplication and division fact fluency work if they need additional practice. The weekly breakdown of skills include: π² Week One: Place Value -Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. -Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. π Week Two: Numerical Expressions -Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols. -Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. π Week Three: Multiplication -Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm -Multiply decimals to hundredths π Week Four: Division -Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors -divide decimals to hundredths 𧩠Week Five: Decimals -Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths -Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place β Week Six: Fractions -Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) -Multiply and divide fractions π Week Seven: Measurement and Data -Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) -Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m) β Week Eight: Geometry -Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement -Plotting points on a coordinate grid π» I will post optional assignments and games each week which support the skills we are learning. Students will need to have access to pencil and paper for problem solving. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Outschool policies regarding refunds for classes: β If your learner misses a class meeting, you are not entitled to a refund. Your teacher may, however, transfer your learner to another available section, or provide a class recording, at their discretion. β If your learner has not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the classβs start time, the meeting may be cancelled, at the teacherβs discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
