Homework
I will provide 5-10 example problems for homework after each class. This is voluntary and will be reviewed at the beginning of the next class. If a student is struggling, they can post their concerns on the classroom wall or message me privately for more clarification. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per assignment.
Assessment
I will assess students in class based on their participation and homework (if they do their homework). Students will also have occasional quizzes. I will also provide a feedback report on each student at the end of the course. Please let me know if you would like a letter grade for this class.

Class Experience

US Grade 5
This class is interactive, where I will break concepts down and check for understanding throughout the class. I scaffold and adjust my pacing to suit the needs of the students. I will use visuals, mnemonics, real-world examples, discussion, guided notes, and games to ensure a deep understanding. Student participation is expected. I strive to make learning fun and instill confidence in the student.

My classroom is more than a place to learn conversions and formulas; it is a safe, supportive environment where students learn communication, social, and problem-solving skills. Every child can succeed with guidance and encouragement. The teacher’s job is to establish a positive and productive learning environment, engaging and differentiated instruction, and a professional relationship with students and parents.

I use the “I do, We do, You do” model to encourage retention and build confidence. After teaching a concept, I will explain a real-world example, guide the students in solving a problem, and then let them solve one independently to ensure they understand the concept.

Each class will begin with a 5-minute breakdown of the previous class’s homework. This is to make sure that everyone retained the lesson and can complete the assignment without help. At 25 minutes into class, we will have a 5-minute brain break where the students can do a physical activity, math riddle, or go to the bathroom.

I do not drill. If students want extra practice, I can recommend books, websites, and provide more exercises. The focus of this class is a deep understanding of the curriculum and the confidence that it instills.

This course will cover the fourth quarter of a 5th grade curriculum. Specifically, these 16 classes include the Common Core State Standards 5.MD.3 – MD.5 (Measurement & Data) and 5.G.1 – 5.G.4 (Geometry). Students will represent and interpret data. Students will understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. Students will graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Students will classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.

Students need to have taken 4th grade math or have been tested on a 5th grade level. We will review 4th grade concepts to build on. We will have class twice a week for eight weeks. The following is our tentative schedule for the fourth quarter:

Week 1: Classify points, lines, and angles. Measure angles
Week 2: Classify polygons and triangles. Identify parts of circles
Week 3: Classify quadrilaterals
Week 4: Area and perimeter
Week 5: Multi-step area and perimeter problems. Multiplication as scaling
Week 6: Solids & nets
Week 7: Volume of solids. Solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume
Week 8: 5th grade math review
Learning Goals
Students will represent and interpret data. Students will understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. My classroom is a safe, supportive environment where students learn communication, social, and problem-solving skills. Every child can succeed with guidance and encouragement.

I am passionate about math. I know a lot of tricks and mnemonics to make math fun and easier to understand. I especially love helping struggling students achieve success. I have been a math teacher and tutor in public school and online since 2010.

I am passionate about creative writing. There are so many ways to express what is in your heart through words, and I would love to help you find that passion as well. I have two years of classroom experience teaching English and writing in public school. I also have had twenty-five books published. Many of them have been translated and narrated. Let me help you bring out your creativity in a way that will astound your audience.

I am also passionate about science and nature. From the expanse of outer space to the deepest depths of the ocean, from the first organisms to grace our planet to the future of technology, let’s explore the universe’s many incredible wonders. I have two years of classroom experience teaching science and robotics in public school.

*I am going on maternity leave mid-late October.
