This 5th Grade Literature Class is a Survey Course and will be taught in a lecture discussion format. The intention is to finish discussion of a book every 3 - 4 weeks. We will continue to see what we can learn from classic books in our modern lives. The first book of the semester will be Tom Sawyer, Detective. Please read chapters 1-5 before the 1st class. The books are listed in the order we will be reading them this semester: Tom Sawyer, Detective by Mark Twain Encyclopedia Brown Cracks the Case by Donald J. Sobol The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder Love That Dog by Sharon Creech Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going – (This story deals with racism and bullying – parental approval is requested) The Emerald Wand of Oz by Sherwood Smith The Sisters Grimm Book One: The Fairy Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley

Parental Guidance
The Liberation of Gabriel King will be taught only with approval from all parents. Likewise there are racial overtones in both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
Supply List
Students can either purchase the digital or print editions of these books from Amazon.com (I get books for all my courses there) or borrow books from the library. Students will know at least a week in advance what the next book will be. The Gutenberg Project (https://www.gutenberg.org/) is an additional resource. It has over 54,000 free public domain ebooks.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
William Alfred Council is a Freelance Writer / Digital Artist. He has a B.A. in English from Columbia University and is a Desert Storm Marine Corps Veteran. He is also a member of the League of Graphic Novel Educators.
A lifelong fan of comics, William interned at Marvel Comics under the tutelage of Editor Gregory Wright. Both a Writer and Graphic Artist since 1992, William began servicing individuals, local churches and organizations under the company name: New Vision Enterprises.
Besides Computer Consultations, William has also taught basic business skills and successfully found funding for Not for Profit organizations. He is currently the President of Zephaniah Comics. He has published Heroic Visions: Superhero Role Playing Adventure Game, Against the E.S.T.: Heroic Visions Adventure Module and two ongoing comic books - The Zephaniah Chronicles and Ogden Tales.
