Class Experience

US Grade 5
This course is part 3 of my 5th Grade English Language Arts Semester class, which has been split into three parts for convenience. Each part makes up the whole Semester, but need not be taken in order, you also have the option to also only enrol for the part your learner requires. This class will meet once a week for 4 weeks with the following learning aims:

Week 1 : The Features of Newspaper Articles
This class will teach the structure of informative writing and practice writing our own news article

Week 2 : Managing Shifts Between Levels of Formality
This class will teach understanding the difference between formal and informal language and recognise the vocabulary and structures that are appropriate for formal speech and writing. We will also learn the subjunctive form.

Week 3 : Identifying the Subject and Object of a Sentence
This class will teach how to identify the subject and object of a sentence, as well how these link to parts of speech, verbs, noun phrases and pronouns. This lesson will also cover expanded noun phrases, how to construct and use these.

Week 4: Figurative Language
This class will teach the types of figurative language and how they are used as poetic or literary devices.

- presentation and structure of newspaper articles
- Formal and informal writing style and techniques
- Grammar (parts of a sentence)
- Subjunctive forms of verbs
