Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
This class will focus on these ELA skills :
- Reading comprehension, inference and close reading
- Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
- Reading across genres (fiction & poetry)
- Figurative langugage
- Editing and Proofreading skills 
- How to write direct/indirect speech
- Creative writing

Alignment to Common Core Standards for 5th Grade ELA :

CC.5.R.L.1 Key Ideas and Details: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when
drawing inferences from the text.
CC.5.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how
characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the
text.
CC.5.R.F.4.a Fluency: Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
CC.5.W.2.d Text Types and Purposes: Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the
topic
CC.5.R.I.6 Craft and Structure: Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and
differences in the point of view they represent.
CC.5.L.1 Conventions of Standard English: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and
usage when writing or speaking.
CC.5.L.4.b Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to
the meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
CC.5.L.5.a Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context.
CC.5.W.9.a Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g., “Compare and
contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or a drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how
characters interact]”)
I have a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature and a Diploma in Teaching Literacy in Primary and Secondary Schools.
I am currently studying an MA in English Literature and am a qualified English Language teacher with TEFL.
Learners will not need any supplies
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This class uses Nearpod and Kahoot!,  both are an interactive web-based software which can be accessed on any device without download or login setup
Texts used are teacher created or in the public domain
