US Grade 5 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
NOTE: on my class page you will find science sections for grades 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5-6. Ask about sibling discounts! I just loved teaching science to students! This course can be taken for the purpose of learning or for reteaching the 5th grade science standards. Every month the class will work on a different standard. (Unless otherwise noted.) The students will interact with the teacher and their peers as they learn, investigate and discuss various science topics. They will engage in hands on activities to further imbed these concepts into their memory. Topic activities will contain educational materials (video clips and books) as well as other mediums that are appropriate for that lesson. **This is a very active class that does require some independence. If your child needs more adaptive assistance, please plan on sitting in on the class. I don't want anyone to miss out just because he/she needs extra in-person help! ———— GRADES 5 & 6 NGSS STANDARDS TO BE TAUGHT THIS YEAR ————- 5-PS1 Matter and Its Interactions -- Matter is made of particles too small to be seen. -- Provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved. (conservation of mass) -- Identify materials based on their properties. -- Determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances (did a chemical reaction occur or not) 6(MS)-PS1 Structure and Properties of Matter / Chemical Reactions -- Atomic structures / composition of simple structures (particles too small to be seen) -- Analyze and interpret data on properties before and after to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred -- Synthetic materials and natural resources -- Changes in particle motion, temperature and substance when thermal energy is added or removed -- Conservation of mass ————- 5-PS2 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions (Energy) -- Gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down -- Potential and kinetic energy -- Newton’s Laws of Motion -- Energy transfer 6(MS)-PS2 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interaction (Energy) -- Forces and Motion: Newton’s Laws of Motion -- Change in motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of an object 6(MS)-PS3 Energy -- Definitions of energy -- Conservation of energy and energy transfer -- Potential and kinetic energy: relationship between kinetic energy to the mass and speed of an object -- Relationship between energy forces ————- 5-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes -- Plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. -- Structures are responsible for particular functions 6(MS)-LS1 Structure, Function and Information Processing -- All living things are made up of cells -- Cells: special structures are responsible for particular functions -- Multicellular organisms: comprised of interacting subsystems ————- 5-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics -- Describe the movement of matter and energy among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment (ecosystem) 6(MS)-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics -- In ecosystems, organisms and populations with similar requirements for food, water, oxygen may compete with each other for resources -- Cycle of matter and energy transfer in amount living and non-living things in an ecosystems 5-PS3 Energy -- Energy in animals’ food was once energy from the sun. 6(MS)-LS2 -- Cycle of matter and energy transfer in ecosystems ————— 5-ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe -- Differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. -- Reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky 6(MS)-ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe -- The universe and its stars: patterns of motion of the sun, moon and stars can be observed, described and predicted -- Patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun, moon, seasons -- Earth and solar system are part of the Milky Way Galaxy which is one of many galaxies ————— 5-ESS2 Earth’s Systems -- Describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact -- Distribution of salt and fresh water on Earth. (+Water Cycle) 6(MS)-ESS2 Earth’s Systems -- Describe how earth’s processes are the result of energy flowing and matter cycling within and among the planet’s systems (Plate Tectonics + geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere interactions) -- Describe the role of water in Earth’s surface processes (water cycle, heat transfer in the atmosphere) -- Global movements of water and it’s changing in form are propelled by sunlight and gravity 6(MS)- ESS2 History of Earth -- Geosphere: explain plate tectonics and large-scale interactions 6(MS)-ESS1 History of Earth -- Use geologic time scale to explain the earth’s 4.6 billion-year-old history —————— 5-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity -- Ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment. 6(MS)-ESS3 Human Impacts -- Natural resources and natural hazards -- Human activities have significantly altered the biosphere, sometimes damaging or destroying natural habitats and causing the extinction of species —————— 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design 6(MS) ETS1 Engineering Design --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR SCHEDULE: Week of Sept 8: Tuesday: Introductions, Expectations, What is Science? Thursday: Fun Experiment & Art Activity Week of Sept 15: Sciencetiric Method + Experiment ** SEPTEMBER to EARLY-DECEMBER - EARTH’S PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE ** 5-ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe -- Differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. -- Reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky 6(MS)-ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe -- The universe and its stars: patterns of motion of the sun, moon and stars can be observed, described and predicted -- Patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun, moon, seasons -- Earth and solar system are part of the Milky Way Galaxy which is one of many galaxies ---- WINTER BREAK: 12-16-2024 to 1-5-2025 ----- ** JANUARY - EARLY-FEBRUARY ** 5-ESS2 Earth’s Systems -- Describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact -- Distribution of salt and fresh water on Earth.
