Class experience

US Grade 5 - 6
I have been a teacher for 20 years, the majority of my time in education has been in English/Language Arts class. Demonstrating proper reading skills and comprehension techniques is one of my passions and strengths. I love teaching book club classes, getting to spend extended time with the students, and reading together is one of my favorite things to do!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will be reading "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson. Here is a review from commonsensemedia.org:

It focuses on the sweet friendship of a tween boy and girl who share imaginative play, creating a world of their own just a rope swing away, far from the school bullies they face. It also features a child's death and grief in the aftermath of the tragedy and may provoke tears. There's mention of cremation, which may be upsetting to some kids. Some strong language, including "b**ch," "damn," and "hell."

The characters in the book have a brief discussion on religion (Christianity) which includes the mention of hell.
The book also mentions buying gifts for the children that are from Santa Claus/not believing in Santa Claus.

If any of these topics are brought up in class, the teacher will direct the conversation to be about the author's choice to include them and how that impacts the literature.

The students will be using Flipgrid to send video responses to the teacher. The students will be added directly to the classroom Flipgrid and will not be sending Flipgrid responses to strangers. This program is often used in schools for collaboration and direct responses to the teachers questions.
