Popular card playing classes, combined in a camp, teach math skills and strategies, as well as a little magic. Grouping to 10, sequencing, and arithmetic will be practiced in a variety of solitaire games.

Class begins with a shuffle and warm up. Parents, this is a great manual dexterity exercise. Students, it looks cool when you can shuffle like a PRO! Mental Math gymnastic challenges are interspersed between games and magic. Each day we build our repertoire of games and tricks and practice math skills. After we've warmed up our hands I will demo either a new game or card trick. Students help me play my cards out and then have the opportunity to practice on their own and ask questions. Class usually ends with a fun speed challenge round of AweSUM10.
Learning Goals
Student's manual dexterity will improve as they learn to shuffle and handle cards. Student's will practice grouping in 10's, basic arithmetic, sequencing, comparison, and logic depending on the game.

I'm a retired military officer who has been certified to teach math and science in HI, AK and CA. I love playing cards (especially Nertz) and I love the way you can sneak in math practice too! Student's enjoy the games, practice their math skills, and get to know their peers. Camp participants actually started creating their own math games with cards.....and I've always viewed it as a serious 'teacher win' when students are teaching and stretching themselves.
