4th/5th Grade Reading Skills- Character Traits

Figuring out Character Traits can be a lot of fun when you know what you're looking for! This Hollywood movie themed class uses a colorful interactive presentation with fun activities to teach you all about analyzing character traits!

In this "Snippet Series" mini-course, our class will meet for 3 weeks, once a week to engage in Reading instruction on Character Traits!  Students can have a difficult time moving past "nice" and "good" when it comes to analyzing characters in a text, but I will teach them (in a fun and interactive way) strategies on how to do this much more deeply.

In each class, we will utilize an interactive presentation (with a Hollywood Movie theme!) that shares notes, examples, and activities to learn how to analyze characters in a text. I will teach this information, then we will work together as a group to complete fun activities, read passages, and find details that support our Character Trait inferences (guesses based on evidence and prior knowledge). 

The schedule for each class is as follows: 
Week 1- Direct Instruction of Character Traits: Notes, Anchors Charts, and Fun Activities to introduce the idea of Character Traits.  I will both model and have students work as a whole group with me to complete these activities.
Week 2- Students will share their "homework" from last night.  Activities/Games to practice analyzing characters in short texts.  We will work together as a whole group with me to complete these activities.
Week 3- Students will share their "homework" from last night.  Review Characterization with longer Example Texts incorporating some standardized testing comprehension questions.  Students will work together as a group and complete some on their own.

This class is perfect for:
* 3rd grade students who are advanced (beyond 3rd grade reading) and ready for the challenge of 4th grade Character Traits
* 4th or 5th grade students who have not yet learned Character Traits
* students who are homeschooling
* students who have already learned Character Traits but would like to review before a big test or before beginning the next grade
* students who have learned Character Traits, but are still struggling with the concept and need extra support.
