A ten week semester course where students will learn reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking skills from a certified ELA instructor. Detailed feedback for EACH assignment provided! *Semesters can be taken in any order.*

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Students will improve their knowledge of reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking at the 5th/6th grade level. They will learn to analyze text, think critically, and discuss text both verbally and through writing.
I am a certified educator who has been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 19 years. I am certified in Reading K-12 as well and have tutored all grade levels for more than 10 years. I specialize in reading skills/strategies, teaching writing, and working with students at their own individual levels.
Homework Offered
Each week, students will have both reading and writing assignments to be completed outside of class time. Specific assignment guidelines and required reading will be posted in the classroom weekly. Students are required to submit their work to the classroom/privately to me for detailed, individualized feedback (provided within 3-4 days).
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will continually be using informal assessment in our class sessions, providing immediate feedback, support, and encouragement to each learner. I give detailed, individualized feedback for EACH assignment submitted in the classroom as well. *I will create a written weekly progress report for each student via a private Outschool message and/or provide assignment/final grades BY PARENT REQUEST!*
Grades Offered
Learners will need a copy of the novel, The White Giraffe, by Lauren St. John. They will also need a notebook and pencil for this course. Access to a printer is recommended, as there will be handouts and graphic organizers to print.
The main character's parents die in a fire prior to the start of the novel. It is briefly mentioned, but not in any detail. There are some mentions of Apartheid in Africa as related through one the main character's experiences, but it is briefly discussed as this situation is not the focus of the novel. Apartheid will not be explicitly taught during our lessons. There is a Zulu healer woman and elements of magic/fortune telling as well.

Please reach out if you would like more information or have concerns/questions!
