Learners will need a copy of the novel, The White Giraffe, by Lauren St. John. They will also need a notebook and pencil for this course. Access to a printer is recommended, as there will be handouts and graphic organizers to print.
The main character's parents die in a fire prior to the start of the novel. It is briefly mentioned, but not in any detail. There are some mentions of Apartheid in Africa as related through one the main character's experiences, but it is briefly discussed as this situation is not the focus of the novel. Apartheid will not be explicitly taught during our lessons. There is a Zulu healer woman and elements of magic/fortune telling as well. Please reach out if you would like more information or have concerns/questions!
