In 4th-grade math, students build on their previous understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and start exploring more advanced topics. Here are some common learning goals for 4th-grade math: Number Sense and Operations: Understand and compare multi-digit numbers up to the thousands. Add and subtract multi-digit numbers, including carrying and borrowing. Multiply two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. Begin to explore division with one-digit divisors. Understand place value and the relationship between digits in a number. Fractions and Decimals: Recognize and represent fractions using models and symbols. Compare and order fractions with like and unlike denominators. Begin to understand decimal notation and the relationship between decimals and fractions. Geometry: Identify and classify different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right). Understand and describe the properties of two-dimensional shapes (sides, angles). Recognize lines of symmetry in shapes. Understand the concepts of perimeter and area. Measurement: Convert measurements within the same system (e.g., inches to feet). Understand and use appropriate units for length, weight, volume, and time. Solve real-world problems involving measurement. Data and Graphs: Collect, organize, and interpret data using tables, charts, and graphs. Understand basic concepts of probability and chance. Problem Solving: Apply mathematical reasoning to solve word problems and real-life situations. Use various strategies to solve problems, including drawing diagrams, making tables, and using mental math. Patterns and Relationships: Identify and extend patterns in sequences of numbers. Explore relationships between numbers and operations. Mathematical Communication: Explain mathematical thinking and reasoning both orally and in writing. Use appropriate mathematical vocabulary to describe concepts. Critical Thinking: Analyze and solve more complex problems that require multiple steps. Apply logical reasoning and critical thinking skills to mathematical challenges.
Students will leave each class with a sample assignment to practice skills independently. This practice is optional but encouraged to reinforce skills taught during tutoring.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
