Students may get optional work throughout the 8 weeks. This is only for those that want to do it. It will not be collected or looked over in class.Assessment
Students will be assessed throughout the 8 weeks by discussion and observation. We will also do assessments twice during this class to see what skills need to be further developed.Class Experience
US Grade 4
In this 8 week class, we will learn math skills taught in 1st quarter of 4th grade. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and explain how they solved a problem. Students will learn through lecture and practice. Students will get a lot of practice problems. I will teach the topic and give examples, we break problems down and work together to solve, and then the students will work on their own problems with my help when needed. Students will be asked to use math vocabulary to explain how they solved the problem. Each class we will start with greetings and warm up problems. I believe it is important for the students to know that I care about them outside of class. This also gives the students an opportunity to connect with each other and talk about common interests. The warm up problems are typically fluency problems and review problems from the previous class. There will then be a 2nd quarter of 4th grade class available for students that are interested in continuing on.
Learning Goals
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.2
4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number
answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be
interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and
estimation strategies including rounding.
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (Grade 4 expectations
are limited to whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000.)
4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it
represents in the place to its right.
4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and
expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each
place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit
arithmetic.
4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
4.MD.13 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg,
g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements
in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column
table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a
4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs
(1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), …
4.MD.24 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid
volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or
decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms
of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line
diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Syllabus
16 Lessons
over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
Place Value of Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison. Recognize a digit represents 10 times the value of what it represents in the place to its right. Name numbers within 1 million by building understanding of the place value chart and placement of commas for naming base thousand units. Read and write multi-digit numbers using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.

Lesson 2:
Comparing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Compare numbers based on meanings of the digits using >, <, or = to record the comparison. Find 1, 10, and 100 thousand more and less than a given.

Lesson 3:
Rounding Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Round multi-digit numbers to the thousands place using the vertical number line. Round multi-digit numbers to any place using the vertical number line. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit numbers to any place value. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit numbers to any place value using real world applications number.

Lesson 4:
Mid-Module Assessment
Students will solve problems using skills that we learned in the first two weeks of class. If needed we will review and go over any skills that students need extra work on. During these classes there will be less discussion than normal. Students will solve problems and send answers in the chat. If students all get the answer correct we will move on. If any student misses the problem we will go over the problem together as a class. No student will be aware of who missed the problem, since answers will be sent to only me in the chat.

Parental Guidance
This class will go at the speed of the students. If all the students understand a skill we will move on to the next skill faster. If the students are having a hard time with a certain skill we will spend more time on that skill.
Supply List
Students will need paper and pencil or whiteboard and marker for each class. Students may also need to print out worksheets to be used in class (this will not happen often and the lesson can be done without the print out if needed.)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi, my name is Madison. I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Social Science and Math. I have a 9 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. We love to play outside and create art with the things we find in nature. I believe that children should have a passion for learning. So let's make things FUN and INTERESTING!
