NOTE: on my class page you will find social studies sections for grades 1-5 and American History. Ask about sibling discounts! This social studies class mainly addresses early American history standards for grades 5-7. Due to the number of geographical areas (continents / countries), people (ancient and modern), causes and dates there is a lot to learn. It takes a number of years to master the concepts. If students show growth in the area of history, I will then add on standards such as geography and economics. I use diagraming, note-taking, books, video clips and hands-on activities to create an interactive learning environment to help students stay engaged. The concepts under social studies can be harder concepts for learners to grasp - it’s not as cut and dry as a science topic. Due to this, there will be a lot of hands-on learning. Students will begin to understand the world they live in and discuss what their roles and responsibilities are. GRADES 5-6 TOPICS TO BE COVERED: Introduction: 5 Themes of Geography - Place - Location - Region - Movement - Human / Environment Interaction -- PRE-HISTORY -- ** Land Bridge Theory: After the “5 Themes of Geography,” we will begin the year with a quick review on the Bering Strait and Early Inhabitants. Ask about sibling discounts! I am a dedicated, fun and full-time Outschool teacher and am licensed in the United States. I have worked in different capacities with children and families for more than 20 years. I am especially passionate about early intervention: academic, social-emotional and learning disabilities. I also love to challenge accelerated students so they do not become bored with learning. Earning a master’s degree in art therapy in 2005, I began my career with children as an art therapist working in residential facilities. My specialty was treating children (ages 5 to 17) who had experienced trauma. Moving to Utah in 2009, I became part of a school teaching children with high functioning autism and pursued a teaching license in special education. I spent eight years teaching first grade prior to assuming the role of K-6 Academic Achievement Specialist. I combined the skills and modalities I acquired first in art therapy and then developed further in teaching. I am Orton-Gillingham certified to help struggling readers succeed. My preference is to use hands-on and “active” experiences to help children meet their individual, social and academic needs. I grew up in the South Pacific on an island called Kwajalein which gave me my love of traveling and experiencing different cultures. My dog, Chiara, was rescued from a small village in Italy when she was a pup. She even has an Italian Passport! I’m excited to be apart of the Outschool family!
