Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner - Advanced Level
During this math bootcamp, students will be introduced to multiple Common Core and traditional strategies in fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students will also decompose fractions, find equivalent fractions, and also order fractions based on size. The goal of the course is to provide both a deep conceptual understanding of fractions, what they represent, their connection to decimals, and how they are use in the real world. Students will additionally practice using the traditional algorithm (step by step procedure) to solving computation problems. The class will strive, however, to provide an understanding of fractions far beyond just calculating and memorizing steps and procedures. Students will practice using vocabulary, properties, equations, story problems and puzzles to practice these concepts. The first two lessons will cover fraction addition and subtraction and the last three lessons will cover fraction multiplication and division.

The purpose of this course is to help students who may be struggling with fractions or fell behind last school year. This is an intensive, intervention type camp. By the end of the camp, students should have a strong understanding of operations involving fractions as well as conceptual understanding of fractions as a whole. The skills discussed span 4th-6th grade.
