Students will learn about popular literary devices and read Inside Out by Francisco Jimenez.

Lesson 3
Thinking About Impossible Decisions
Students will envision facing circumstances difficult decisions and read Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and The Pendulum.

Lesson 4
Thinking About Impossible Decisions
Students will envision facing circumstances difficult decisions and read Lather and Nothing Else by Hernando Téllez.

Analyzing Social Norms
Students will explore societal rules and read The Party by Pam Munoz Ryan.

Students will write a speech and read The Stone Boy by Gina Berriault. They will use do research and use material from the story to support their argument.

Students will give their speeches, discuss their favorite stories, and have any questions that have answered.

Ms. Rae has over 8 years of experience teaching creative writing to Middle School students. She has been teaching ESL learners online for 6 years, is TOEFL certified, and holds a Bachelors degree in Performing Arts.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Homework
Frequency: 1-2 per week
Feedback: as needed
Details: Each class concludes with a written homework assignment to be completed outside of class. Assignments are submitted via Google Docs. Students are expected to complete the homework via Google Docs.
Assessment
Frequency: 3-6 throughout the class
Details: Students will receive written feedback on their weekly essays. Teacher sends a short summary to parents at the end of the semester.
- Basic reading comprehension (at least a 5th grade level)
- Basic computer skills (ability to open and close tabs, use google docs)
- Basic writing skills (recognize proper punctuation and grammar rules)
A device with a keyboard, working microphone, and a mouse. Using a laptop or computer is ideal.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students do not have to be good at typing, but should be comfortable using a mouse and a keyboard. This class does not use paper and pencil. 

No special accounts need to be created to use Google Docs. If your child does not have an email account to access Google Docs, then the teacher will be able to send the content using another method.

Students may be asked to revise their written work before the next in-person meeting. Teacher comments are placed in the document's comment section.
In some cases, the teacher may remit a short video to the student to demonstrate what changes are recommended.
