US Grade 4 - 5
In this 4-day camp, students will explore the exciting world of fractured fairytales—stories that take well-known tales and transform them with unexpected twists! Through reading, discussion, and hands-on activities, students will develop a deeper understanding of narrative elements such as plot, character, setting, and conflict while also stretching their creative thinking. This class is a great way to build on student comprehension and prepare them for another year of reading growth! Each session begins with a classic fairytale and a fractured version of the same story. Students will compare and contrast the two versions, analyzing how the author’s choices impact the overall narrative. They will discuss how simple changes—such as telling the story from a different perspective, swapping character roles, or altering the setting—can lead to new and interesting outcomes. Through guided discussions and fun activities, students will learn how to identify key story elements and recognize how authors use these elements to craft engaging tales. Throughout the camp, students will take an active role in the creative process. They will experiment with reimagining familiar stories by changing characters, adding plot twists, and exploring alternate endings. Through brainstorming, group collaboration, and independent writing time, they will build confidence in their storytelling abilities while strengthening their comprehension skills. By the end of the camp, each student will have created their own original fractured fairytale, incorporating the narrative elements they’ve explored throughout the sessions. They will have the opportunity to share their stories with their peers, gaining experience in storytelling, active listening, and constructive feedback. This class is perfect for young readers and writers who love fairytales, enjoy creative expression, and want to deepen their understanding of how stories are structured and told!
