Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be given a set of skills to work on at the end of each class. This is normally written in the classroom notes. It is expected for good progress that the learner spends time between lessons practising the skills learnt and the new task.Assessment
Consistent feedback will be given during every lesson helping the student to understand what musical technique or skill to develop next.Class Experience
Join me for a fun and engaging 1-on-1 flute lesson where your child will discover the joys of music! Beginners: We start by mastering the basics of the instrument that will include assembling of the instrument, how to care for the instrument, how to make a sound and then reading music. After the first few lessons the learner should be able to play simple music and be able to tongue the notes correctly. Over the course of the next 10 - 20 lessons, your child will learn all the essential basic notes on the instrument, simple rhythms, articulation, and will be able to play numerous beginner music on their instrument. Normally I use the Abracadabra Flute book to complement any method books used in school band. I have my own specially created beginner warm up exercises and simple rhythm reading exercises and play-along videos for practising with. Intermediates: Over the course of 10 - 20 lessons we work on expanding the range of notes that can be played, learn more complicated rhythm patterns and play more complex music. Alongside this we will learn scales, warm-up exercises and sight-reading skills. This will ensure that the intermediate player can play confidently any solos, first audition pieces and intermediate band music. At this stage I tend to use the ABRSM flute books, Rubank study book, my own specially created resources, alongside any audition or band music that the learner needs to play. Advanced: Over the course of 10 - 20 lessons we work on tone, expression and control of the instrument, particularly in terms of the high notes. We continue to learn more complicated melodies, rhythm patterns and play more complex music. Alongside this we will learn more advanced scales and arpeggios (major, minor, arpeggios, dom 7ths, chromatic scales, etc), warm-up exercises and sight-reading skills. This will ensure that the advanced player can play confidently any solos, regional and state audition pieces and advanced band music. At this stage I tend to use the ABRSM flute books, Rubank study book, a variety of solo and ensemble books, my own specially created resources, alongside any audition or band music that the learner needs to play.
Learning Goals
By the end of each class, the student will have mastered a new musical concept linked with the pieces they are learning. This can be accuracy of notes, rhythms, articulation, dynamics, phrasing or playing with expression. A practice goal will be set.
