This course is modeled after a challenge I created for my 1st grade public school students during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school year. Inspiration from the author created website: https://www.wordcollector.org/
• Independently read 4 picture books with rich vocabulary (from home or borrowed from the library) • Create a Word Collector Journal to list new and interesting words from each book read (Word Collector Journal document provided by the teacher) • Teach others your word expertise by sharing the top 2-4 words and meaning you learned each week
2 files available upon enrollment• Pencil • Highlighter pen • Students will need at least 4 picture books with rich vocabulary from home or borrowed from a public library. • Students will need access to a printer to print out the Word Collector Journal document that will be provided by the teacher OPTIONAL: A folder or clipboard to hold the Word Collector Journal
Students will teach others the words they learned in each book through live in-class presentations or pre-recorded videos shared on Padlet.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
• Picking 4 vocabulary rich picture books • Independently reading each book • Independently writing new or interesting words in Word Collector Journal • Helping to find and write the meaning of words that will be shared in class Materials: External Resources *YouTube (Teacher screen-share in class only) *Padlet (Link provided by teacher for students to share work online. No parent account needed. Only students in this class will have access to this Padlet page)
