In this self-paced course, there is no live instruction. The material will be posted all at once and you can view it during the week at your convenience. The class will include multiple interactive activities (in the Outschool classroom). There are many different types of essays, but they are often defined in four categories: persuasive, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays. Persuasive and expository essays are focused on conveying information and making clear points, while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity in nonfiction writing. In this class, learners will practice writing all 4 types of essay writing. The weekly lessons include a wide variety of topics necessary to write 5 paragraph essays, such as the writing process, thesis statements, supporting evidence, sentence types, descriptive writing techniques, etc. Learners will be led through the writing prompt, pre-writing ideas/notes, and given a graphic organizer. Each week the learner pre-writes and drafts an essay (based on the assigned prompts) and continues to revise/edit any in-progress essays - all completed in Google Docs and uploaded to the Outschool Classroom. The teacher will supply weekly feedback for edits and revisions so that the learner can finalize their writing. In addition to the weekly lessons, there will be weekly interactive components such as class discussions, brainstorming ideas through Jamboard, EdPuzzle activity, matching activities, and more. Instruction will be supplemented with additional graphic organizers, sample writing pieces, and additional video clips. The course material will be posted at the start of each week (Monday): 1.
