Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 9
In this 4-day camp, learners will practice note-taking skills using video lectures and articles. Each class will focus on one style of note-taking (list, outline, concept map, or Cornell) which will be compared to the notes the teacher also takes during the note-taking time. Templates of each style will be provided, but learners should come to the sessions with a notebook and something to write with as templates will not be readily available outside of class in note-taking situations.

Each class will be structured as follows:
Five-minute review on all styles of notes and quick tips on how to take notes discussion style
Five-minute review on the style of notes to be used in the class in detail
A three to five-minute educational TED-Ed/Nearpod video during which learners and teacher will take notes
Five-minute comparison of notes with peers and the teacher
A five to ten-minute educational article reading during which learners and the teacher will take notes
Five-minute comparison of notes with peers and teacher
A second three to five-minute educational TED-Ed/Nearpod video during which learners and the teacher will take notes (if time allows)
Five-minute comparison of notes with peers and teacher (if time allows).

Day 1- List Style
Day 2- Outline Style
Day 3- Concept Map Style
Day 4- Cornell Notes Style

Live practice and comparing to the teacher will help students identify or know if they are including key elements in their notes. By practicing the different styles, learners will be able to find a style that works best for them.

**Some prior note-taking how-to class(es) may help (but are not necessary) as this class is focused on the practical application and practice of taking notes and not teaching how to do it. There is a quick tips review in each class but we will not focus on how to abbreviate, use Google docs to take notes, slow videos, provide outlines of content, etc. Some of this content will naturally arise in the sessions and be discussed. However, the goal of this class is to practice the styles and compare with others to help students be equipped to walk into a live, real-time session and take notes effectively with no preparation beyond a notebook and pen.
