 Week 1
Lesson 1
Unit 1: Investigating Questions (pages 1-14)
Discuss the green anole ("uh-nowl") on the front cover of the student worktext. https://srelherp.uga.edu/lizards/anocar.htm Before class - Please read and complete pages 4-11 Show and Tell - anything inspired from their reading pages Complete together in class - pages 1-3, 12-14
Lesson 2
How Do Scientists Use Tools? (pages 17-28)
Before class - Please read and complete pages 18-25 Show and Tell - Students may make a paper airplane (inspired from page 12) and test it to see if it flies. They can show it to us. These tools may also be shown for show and tell (if the students have any): thermometer, measuring spoons, measuring tape, magnifying box or glass, stopwatch Complete together in class - pages 17, 26-28 We will learn about the fascinating up-close features that are visible under a microscope!
Lesson 3
How Do Scientists Use Data? (pages 33-44)
Before class - Please read and complete pages 34-40 *Please print the seasons graph to bring to class. Please bring crayons or colored pencils. Show and Tell - a model, map, bar graph, line graph, or data table Complete together in class - pages 33, 41-44, and the season graph After class - Collect data and make your own chart or graph that you may show at the next class.

Careers in Science: Meteorologists (pages 47-52)
Before class - Please read page 47 and begin completing the Unit 1 Review on pages 49-52. Show and Tell - Present your own chart or graph. You can make a new one or add more votes to the seasons graph that we made already in class. Complete together in class - page 48
Lesson 5
Unit 1 Review and begin Unit 2: The Engineering Process (pages 49-63)
How Do Engineers Use the Design Process? Before class - Finish completing the Unit 1 Review on pages 49-52 and please read and complete pages 56-63. Show and Tell - a bridge Have fun drawing or building a bridge to show us! You may use any materials at your house. Examples - Lego bricks, straws, paper, blocks Your bridge may be copied from a famous bridge or it can be your very own design. Complete together in class - pages 64-65
Lesson 6
How Can You Design a Tree House? (pages 64-68)
Before class - Please catch up on any pages you have not completed yet through page 65. Show and Tell - problem/solution (see page 66 for ideas) Complete together in class - pages 66-68 The teacher will screen-share from Epic for Kids: Time to Build, by: Kate Riggs, illustrated by: Laszlo Kubinyi Students will work on drawing the prototype for their dream treehouse on page 68.

How are Technology and Society Related? (pages 69-78)
Before class - Please read and complete pages 70-77 Show and Tell - dream treehouse prototype that was built Complete together in class - 69, 78
Lesson 8
Careers in Science: Civil Engineers (pages 79-80, 83-88)
Before class - Please read and complete pages 79, 80, 83 Show and Tell - any technology item in your home Students will explain if they believe their technology item is simple or complex, and why they believe it's simple or complex. Complete together in class - pages 84, 88
Lesson 9
Unit 2 Review (pages 85-88)
Before class - Complete the Unit 2 Review, pages 85-88 Show and Tell - old and new technology example Examples: hand held pencil sharpener vs. electric pencil sharpener old phone vs. new mobile phone Complete together in class - go over Unit 2 Review answers If time allows, students will write an ABC story about civil engineers.

Students will be expected to complete homework assignments between class meetings.
