Class Experience

Oh no!! Someone has cursed the classrooms of Mathhattan Elementary and all of the school supplies are turning into little monsters! The police have been drawing up a list of the possible suspects for the crime, but Mr. Manners needs our Math Detectives help to put a stop to all of the craziness!! In this super fun mystery, students will solve the clues and eliminate suspects on the suspect list until only one remains. This fun detective story has students read simple words and phrases to match information given with the suspects on the list, so we can know who who the bad guy (or gal) is!

Students will practice addition (double-digit and triple-digit numbers), subtraction (double-digit and triple-digit numbers), place value (up to ten thousands), comparing numbers (greatest or least, odd or even), and multiplication facts (2s, 5s, and 10s) as they work through all of the clues for the case. As students answer the questions for the clues, they will eliminate suspects that do not match the clues until all five have been completed. **I have adjusted this class so that there is nothing to print off. All clues and the elimination of suspects will be done on a shared screen. Students should bring paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker to work out the math problems.

At the beginning of class, we will have introductions and answer some fun school related questions before getting started with the mystery. Then, students will watch a short intro video of what is going on at Mathhattan Elementary. For each clue, I will read the directions, project the math problems onto the classroom screen, and let our Math Detectives get to work! Please be sure that your learner brings some scratch paper and a pencil or a dry erase board and marker to work out their problems. When they answer the problems correctly, letters will be unlocked on the screen to present a clue. As they find the clues, students will use the information and deductive reasoning to help narrow down the suspect list and eliminate suspects that will be seen on the screen. At the end of class, when they find the correct suspect, there will be one more bonus round of math work (a mix of addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts) that must be completed to make sure the classroom chaos stops for good!

After class, I will send an award to each student for solving the case and to celebrate what great Math Detectives they were! Now, let's have some FUN learning math!! I look forward to seeing your learners in the classroom!!

Hello, my name is Kristi. I am a married fur-mom to two dogs, Olaf and Olivia. I enjoy reading, being outdoors, learning new things, and going on adventures with my husband!

I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. I also have a MBA concentrating in Accounting. Math is a big passion of mine! I am a certified PreK-5 teacher in the state of Georgia. I also hold current Gifted and Talented, Special Education, and TESOL education certifications. I have been teaching in some capacity for 11 years with experience in all elementary grade levels, from pre-K to 5th grade! I taught at a private preschool for 1 year and the rest of my teaching years have been in a public school setting or online. In May of 2019, I began a new endeavor, teaching ESL online to students in China. I absolutely love teaching online and meeting students all the way across the world! As a teacher, I believe it is my responsibility to make learning fun, help and encourage students to be successful in learning, and fostering a love for learning at an early age. In my classroom, you will see plenty of activities for varying learning styles, lots of movement and interactive activities, and learning through play.

I am passionate about teaching young children, and I look forward to meeting your learner(s) and helping them develop their young minds! I can't wait to meet you in the classroom!
