US Grade 3
This class is part of the Outschool Pods program and is intended to build learner community while covering a full-semester's curriculum. We will share additional links for future months upon enrollment. To learn more about Outschool Pods, please visit: www.info.outschool.com/outschool-pods In this full year class, students will receive all the necessary tools to be successful in third grade. This class will cover everything third grade, such as, Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. My goal is to ensure that learning is fun and successful to every learner enrolled. We will have learning their music, dancing, and chanting. The cost of the class is for a full year 3rd grade learning experience. Students will have access to Zearn and Lalilo as learning interventions. Zearn Math is a complete math program that provides Common Core aligned math lessons, personalized to individual learners, and based on Eureka Math. Lessons focus on three critical components: deep understanding, fluency, and problem-solving. Lalilo focuses on essential literacy skills like reading, words families, and letter sounds recognition. Lalilo is web-based and easy to set up, and can be accessed through most devices. Teachers can assign specific lessons based on students needs. Once students get going, Lalilo offers consistent feedback and reinforcement to help them work away at their own pace. All class materials will be provided to students through the Outschool platform. We will read reading materials during our class visits. All reading materials will be on-grade level. Reading and Writing will cover the following: -Phonics - Reading - Spelling (each week students will receive a new set of words) - Writing - Grammar and punctuation - Literature - Poetry Math will cover the following: -Developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100 -Developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1) -Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area -Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes Social Studies covers the following: We will discuss what is a community and what creates a community and our family and everyday creates the community we are living in. Students will be able to have a better understanding of what creates the government. We will also learn the difference between local and federal government. -Communities -Local -Citizenship -Leaders -Governments -Economic systems in different communities Science covers the following: -Classification of animals: Vertebrates (with a backbone) and invertebrates (without a backbone) and the similarities and differences of animals. -The human body: The skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. -Light and vision: Sunlight can create shadows, and light can be reflective. The color of light hitting an object affects how the object is seen. An object is seen when light traveling from the object enters the eye. -Astronomy and space: The properties of suns, moons, planets, and stars as well as their locations and movements. Forces and motion: How and why objects move. * Please note that printable will be sent out every Friday evening. *Students will receive a letter grade at the end of the course. Week 1: Welcome weeks and 2nd grade review. Week 2: Creative Writing: We will spend this week getting to know each. Writing for understanding. Focus on parts of speech, similes and metaphors, punctuation, double negatives, and spelling rules Formulate multiple paragraph pieces that focus on a specific purpose or audience English/Reading: Use knowledge of root words to determine the meaning of unknown words within a passage Math: PLACE VALUE, ROUNDING, AND ALGORITHMS FOR ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION Social Studies: State government (students will learn based on their own state, which they reside) Week 3: Writing: Grammar usage Write original compositions, applying what they’ve learned about grammar and mechanics Write a variety of pieces (chronological, cause and effect, personal experience) English/Reading: Distinguish and interpret words with multiple meanings. Define figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification) Week 4: Math: UNIT CONVERSIONS AND PROBLEM SOLVING WITH METRIC MEASUREMENT Creative Writing: Understanding the writing process English: Phonics and sounds Social Studies: Local Government
