Description
Class Experience
This class is designed to review and reinforce 3rd and 4th-grade mathematical concepts. It may also include some logic challenges appropriate for the 3rd and 4th-grade classrooms. Specific content may vary depending on the level of the students and the time they take to solve the problems. The teacher has a bank of possible problems and will be adjusting the difficulty level based on the needs of the students and the time constraints of the class as the challenge progresses. Because this is an ongoing class, students will be able to review a wider range of topics than could be accomplished in a one-time class. Students may join at any time. This class includes a wide range of skill building: 3rd and 4th-grade math content review peer tutoring communicating mathematically decision making reasoning and logic listening and sharing
I love teaching math! My own children have enjoyed playing Minecraft, and I know how popular it is with this age set. I also lead and coordinate activities for homeschoolers in my area. As such, I enjoy seeing them work together to solve problems. As a former classroom teacher, I thought creating this mystery would be a fun way to have students interact with each other while having fun solving math problems. I have created and currently teach all the classes in the Solve a Mystery Minecraft Themed Challenge roster which includes classes for grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and pre-algebra/algebra. I hold a current professional educator's license with special endorsements in mathematics, language arts, and general science.
No homework is assigned. A welcome letter and optional pre-class worksheet will be available prior to many scheduled sessions. These may be utilized at the parent/guardian's discretion to help the learner prepare for each class or to review and reinforce the material after each class. When available, each worksheet will be posted approximately 24 hours prior to the start of each session.
1 file available upon enrollmentA WORKING WEBCAM IS NECESSARY FOR INTERACTION AND ASSESSING STUDENT PROGRESS. Students will need paper and a pencil available for calculations, however a whiteboard and dry erase marker may be substituted. A ruler with standard and metric units should also be available.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The teacher will be checking student understanding throughout the lesson. There will be lots of discussion of the problems, and the teacher will ask students to talk about their answers and the processes they used to get their answers. The teacher will encourage students to discuss a variety of ways to solve problems. There may also be times when the teacher asks the students to type an answer into the chatbox. The teacher will be sensitive to the individual needs of the students. Please message the teacher if there is information you feel will help the teacher work with your learner. There may be times the teacher asks the students to demonstrate their understanding of a concept. For example, "Show me a pair of parallel lines." A WORKING WEBCAM IS NECESSARY FOR THIS CLASS. THE WEBCAM SHOULD BE KEPT ON THROUGHOUT THE LESSON. This helps the teacher work to adapt to the student's needs.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This is a 3rd and 4th-grade level math class that uses a Minecraft theme. Because this class is designed to give students choices and allow for student participation, it may run longer than the scheduled time. This is an ongoing class. The class fee for each week is charged on Sunday. Students may come and go in ongoing classes. For your convenience, a link is provided with details on the ongoing class format. A link is also provided for students to test Zoom. I recommend testing Zoom and having your learner practice the functions outlined in step 4, particularly the unmute/mute mic button and the raise hand button. Because class time is limited, the teacher must focus on the class and is not able to resolve individual tech issues. Testing Zoom and ensuring your learner knows how to use the classroom functions will help the learning experience go more smoothly. When enrolling in this class, you are reserving a seat for your learner. If a verified learner misses a session for which he is enrolled, the recording may be requested by messaging the teacher. If no students were in attendance, there will not be a recording. The recording may be available a few hours after the completion of each session and is useful to review concepts or for when a registered and verified learner is not able to be in attendance.
