Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
I am here to help students in a 1-on-1 setting with 3rd - 6th grade students in Saxon or Singapore math books. What I can help students achieve: - Students who want to accelerate through their course and move on to the next course faster. - Students who need to catch up with their current course. - Students who are struggling with one or two topics. I would love to discuss what you are looking for in a one-on-one class. I have extensive experience working with homeschool students, including making custom classes, accelerated classes, catching up, and much more. Examples of what a session can look like: - A review of the topics presented in the lessons the student is working on. - Together, the student and I will work through practice problems similar to topics shown in the lesson they are on. - Finishing class with student working through a problem by themselves while I guide them as they need. If a student is wishing to accelerate through one of the math classes at a faster pace, I can work with both the parent and student on a reasonable plan. An example of this would be the student taking a placement test before our first session to evaluate where they are in relation to the book topics. The first session would be discussing and reviewing topics they already know. Then following sessions would be assigning lessons for the week, discussing the topics learned, teaching new material, answering questions and working through practice problems together. For example, some students wish to complete a year of Saxon math in one semester (~15-16 weeks) and I can work on how to make that feasible for students. Topics we can work together on for 5/4 students: number sense, numeration, numerical operations, measurement and geometry, patterns, relationships, math functions, and data manipulation are introduced. Students will specifically learn to add three-digit numbers, subtract numbers with re-grouping, read time, write numbers, estimate arithmetic answers, divide with two-digit answers, multiply three or more factors, simplify fraction answers, use a decimal number line, and more. Topics we can work together on for 6/5 students: the order of operations; geometry and measurement; integers; divisibility concepts; ratios; statistics and probability; prime and composite numbers; patterns and sequences; and powers and roots. Students will specifically learn about making a multiplication table, adding/subtracting fractions with a common denominator, multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100, perimeter, simple probability, decimal parts of a meter, reciprocals, volume, square roots, graphing points on a coordinate plane, and more.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I am Dr. K!
I have a PhD in Chemistry. I have over 10 years of teaching experience with both children and adults! I have taught thousands of classes in Biology, Chemistry, and some in between (Biochemistry, Ecology, etc).
My biggest philosophy behind teaching is making every concept applicable to the things around us. We can read a textbook and learn about atoms and bonds, but relating that to real world concepts is how we will really grasp the concepts in my classes.
