Each week, we will read a new Patricia Polacco picture book during class and discuss the characters, setting, themes, and more. Patricia Polacco is a well-known children's literature author and her stories are full of rich themes and pave the way for beautiful conversations. We can learn so much about writing, life, and reading skills through wonderful authors. Sometimes we will do group activities in response to the story such as creative writing or drawing. Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking skills as they participate in discussions, but students will not be expected to orally read to the class. Students do not need to read before class, we will read the story together. On the Monday before each class, if there are any materials that need to be printed, they will be posted in the class. Week of June 8: For the Love of Autumn: We will practice making predictions throughout the story. The after reading activity will focus on pets and their impact on people's lives. Week of June 15: Thank You Mr. Falker: We will discuss problem and solution throughout the story. The after reading activity will be letter writing to someone we appreciate and that has changed our lives. Week of June 22: My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother: We will focus on characters throughout this story. The after reading activity will involve identifying and supporting character traits. Week of June 29: Thunder Cake: We will focus on cause and effect relationships throughout this story. The after reading activity will be about courage and how to inspire others to be courageous when they are afraid. Week of July 6: Chicken Sunday: We will focus on making connections to our reading.
