55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, artists will learn the tricks of drawing cylinders: closed top, as a layer cake, as an open container, and filled with liquid. We will introduce five of the Seven Fundamentals of 3D Drawing: foreshortening, shading, shadows, contour, and overlapping (size and placement come later!) We will compress familiar shapes to show a viewer’s perspective. We will understand and use the Value Scale and utilize contrast to create the impression of three dimensions. We will use stopping and starting lines to indicate foreground and background. This is one of a collection of Level 1 3D Drawing classes. Learners can take all three of these introductory classes, and then be ready for Level Two classes which build on these skills. Level Three classes combine shapes into all sorts of familiar objects. Level 1 classes are: 3D Drawing Level 1: Cubes 3D Drawing Level 1: Cylinders 3D Drawing Level 1: Spheres Level 2 classes are: 3D Drawing Level 2: More Cubes 3D Drawing Level 2: More Cylinders 3D Drawing Level 2: More Spheres We will be doing four drawings in this class, and a fifth bonus drawing if time allows. All artists will have the skills they need to continue drawing cylinders in any configuration on their own. Our learners will be ready to add these cylinder drawing skills to other geometric solid tricks they might already know. I have taught this class to literally hundreds of children, both in person as well as via remote learning platforms. I have a second bird’s-eye-view camera so learners can see my drawing clearly on their screen. I will be drawing all these examples right along with you.
Learning Goals
Artists will learn the fundamentals of drawing cylinders in 3D and how to combine them to draw familiar objects. Artists will be comfortable with using a simple pencil as a powerful drawing tool. Artists will understand and be able to apply the concepts of foreshortening, shading, shadows, contour, and overlapping. We will understand and use the Value Scale to give our drawings context and impact.
