30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Join me for this fun cooking course to learn how to create tasty meals and treats to share with your family and friends. Learners will actively participate in easy-to-follow recipes. Most recipes can be adapted. This class is appropriate for all learners. When you enroll your learner, please send an email with any allergies he or she might have. We will start class with a couple of minutes of introductions, making sure that everyone knows each other's names. We will read the recipe to check that we have the correct ingredients and equipment. Learners will have clean hands, and a clean work surface. We will go through the recipe step by step, so that all learners can follow along. All ingredients will need to be measured before class, to leave learners enough time for each step (unless learner does not know how to measure). By the end of the class, learners will know how to follow and complete the recipe. Please be aware, some recipes may not always be completed in the 45-minute live class session. Sometimes the food will need additional heating or cooling time, or decoration steps will need to be finished at home. Your learner will receive the recipe to follow along with. Before each class, you will also receive a list of ingredients and supplies needed to prepare the recipe, and a shopping list. The parent/guardian is encouraged to prepare the shopping list and gather ingredients, materials, and cooking tools. **Please always feel free to substitute as needed when the exact ingredients or materials are unavailable or if any allergies exist.**
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to follow all recipes step-by-step, learn how to measure wet and dry ingredients, how to setup a “mise en place”. Learners will also gain confidence and independence for cooking any food and feel comfortable in and around the kitchen. Learners will learn simple handling or utensils (knives, spatulas, etc.). Learners will also learn how important it is to keep our cooking are clean and clear as we cook. (This class will not provide instruction on how to wash the items we used but learn the importance of keeping the kitchen neatly as we cook.)
Implementing “mise en place” in the kitchen and in life has a number of benefits First, mise en place allows you to plan your work in advance and stay organized.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Recipes are simple and easy to follow, however parents/caregivers should remain near to supervise the use of kitchen tools and equipment (microwave, oven, stove, knives, toaster, blender, etc.). When you enroll in this class, you accept full responsibility for your learner's safety. It is recommended that a responsible adult is in the same room as the learner (Outschool policy is that adults must remain off camera) and ready to step in to help if necessary. Learners will chop ingredients and use knives for food preparation. Please be aware that sometimes sharper knives can be safer than blunt knives for chopping, as less force is necessary, and they are less likely to slip or bounce off the food. Some recipes will require the use of food mixers. Some recipes will use the microwave, or stove, to melt or heat ingredients and some will need putting into and taking out of the oven to cook. Please, check them for potential allergens for your children.
