 Week 1
Lesson 1
LINES & SHAPES
Students will learn the most basic elements of lines and shapes which are used to create the foundation of any visual artwork. They will practice different line types, explore how we can identify shapes in any drawing and apply these concepts in drawing a simple animal sketch.
Lesson 2
VALUES & TEXTURES
Students will learn how to interpret the effects of "light" also known as "values", and how the concept of value combined with shading techniques can be used to create different textures. Students will practice different shading techniques and apply them to achieve 3-D illusions of rough, smooth, silky and shiny textures.
Lesson 3
SPACE & FORM
Students will learn how to create the illusion of depth by creating a 3-D form from a 2-D shape. They will learn how to unify all elements learned, by creating a sketch using lines and shapes, then achieving the values and shading needed to create texture, and identifying the positive and negative areas to make a realistic composition.
Students will sketch using these elements and principles of art. They will gain the basic knowledge about the approach and knowledge about the creation of a drawing. This will train beginners to develop observational drawing skills on the characteristics of different works of art.
Teacher Allie May is a contemporary artist who loves to indulge in all mediums, but focuses most on drawing and painting. She is a graduate student in the BFA program at California State University Long Beach, and aims to pursue a career in teaching art. Her art influence began at a young age, but she considers herself “self-taught.” Allie is passionate about encouraging students to master the fundamental skills and technical aspects of creating, but also develop a style that is unique to each student. Her promise is to encourage a mindset where students are confident in themselves and their ability to create.
