Class Experience

By popular request... introducing, American Girl x Baking!

This 3 day camp is an opportunity to learn about American Girl book character, Kira Bailey while baking some fun treats. Each meeting, we will learn, chat, and bake!

**This is an extended version of my one-time Kira class. I use the same materials/slides/information, just split into three days while adding some baking activities.***

In this three time class, I will introduce Kira from the American Girl book series. We will talk about who she is and why her books are great examples of girl friendship, kindness, and always searching to do the right thing. I will review a brief preview of all of her books/stories, talk about Kira and her characteristics, and why she is such an inspiration to all girls of today. I will also review some geography and aspects of living in the Australian bush as Kira spends the entire summer in the Australian bush with her aunts! We will review some of the environmental challenges that the Australian bush faces with droughts, fires, and other natural disasters and how that impacts the wildlife in the area.

Day 1: We will introduce Kira and learn a bit about her while making koala cupcakes.
Day 2: We will discuss the highlights of Kira's book series with an emphasis on book #1, "Kira" while making Australian fairy bread.
Day 3: We will talk a bit about Kira's summer in Australia while making trifle.
Learning Goals
Students will learn different elements of American life in present-day Australia using the American Girl "Kira" book series as a reference.

Hi there!
My name is Mrs. Rodenbeck and I am a middle school history teacher! I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th, grade history for the past 5 years! Before that, I taught high school history. I absolutely LOVE learning about people from the past! I like understanding how people lived in different times in history.

I studied anthropology in college. My goal as a kid was to be Indiana Jones! Archaeology and cultural anthropology are my favorite disciplines. I like to learn about what past peoples have built and how those things impact their culture. I’ve even done work for Chicago’s Field Museum since 2007. Now I work in the education department at the Field Museum with other teachers and bringing history topics into their classrooms.

I love teaching about the American Girl books and their periods of time in history because I used to WORK at the American Girl store in Chicago. I worked there all throughout my college years. I loved American Girl when I was a kid and I loved it, even more, when I worked at the store in college!

I hope that from this course, you can take some of my passion for history and for American Girl and get a little more excited about learning about other people. There are so many fun and exciting things to learn about! I can’t wait to share them with you!
