Class Experience

US Grade 4
Advanced Level
This is a tough and challenging advanced class!

If your student has never done VERY CHALLENGING math problems and you would like to get your students started with interesting math competition problems, we recommend starting with our 1/2 class or our Singapore Math classes.

Recommended for homeschoolers or as an after school supplement class.

CLASS EXPERIENCE

We cover approximately 7-10 questions per class, depending on the class and the speed at which they understand the material.

We will go over math questions like those from Math Kangaroo and Math Olympiad. It will be fun to prepare students for these math contests. This will include both puzzle questions and problem-solving questions.

The class is a working session so students will have a chance to work out problems and then talk with their classmates about their solutions. This class is hands-on. Students participate by sharing their work or solutions with their classmates, and then they share with the entire class. We may use break-out rooms to give students a short amount of time to get into small groups and share their findings. If they are stuck, the teacher will work out problems step by step.

This is not a direct instruction class. Students in this class enjoy first trying things on their own, and then the teacher and students will discuss the questions and talk about the solutions.

Students should come with a desire to learn and try new things, and enjoyment of dealing with challenging questions. They should also like sharing their answers with their classmates.

This class is best for students who are not afraid of making mistakes and learning from them.

PRE-REQUISITES AND PLACEMENT TEST

Students should be at the advanced 3rd-grade level or regular 4th-grade level. Students should be able to add numbers in the hundreds and thousands. Ideally, students can multiply up two digits by two digits in multiplication, complete division up of 3 digits by 1 digit numbers. Some problems can be solved by guessing and checking, although we talk about more efficient ways to solve these problems. The problems we do in this class are mostly word problems.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS

Here are some sample questions like those we cover in class. If your student can do 2 out of 4 of these questions, then the class is a good fit. You can also take the pre-assessment as noted above.

1. Every day, Denise goes swimming, running, or cycling. She alternates the activities each day, in that order. If on Monday she goes swimming, when is the next day she will go swimming again?

2. How many numbers are between 100 and 200, inclusive, and end with zero?

3. Lai uses each of the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 once to make a four-digit number. The number is even. The tens digit is greater than the hundreds digit. The thousand digit is twice the ones digit. What is the number?

4. There are goats, sheep, and chickens in the yard. If in total they have 70 legs and there are the same number of goats, sheep, and chickens. How many goats, sheep, and chickens are there?
