This is the place for children to start learning German! No prior experience required! This section of Ich Kann Deutsch! Beginner 1, Part 1 will meet TWICE a week. Two classes a week will enable students to build their German speaking ability quicker and more solidly. Students will listen to, speak, and write German. I will incorporate slides, props, rewards, singing, video clips, writing, and many speaking opportunities, all designed to keep students engaged. Material will be drawn from various sources, but mainly from, "Hallo Anna," a German as a Foreign Language curriculum. Each time the class meets, students will not only learn new vocabulary words, but also practice previously learned vocabulary words, which is important for new language retention. Our class will generally be split between approximately 30 minutes full immersion learning, and approximately 15 minutes studying the language in both German and English. Immersion is the most natural way to learn a language, and it becomes usable language that the brain can easily access for speaking. After the immersion portion of class, we will engage in language study where students will learn verb conjugations, grammar, etc. Studying a foreign language is how foreign languages are commonly taught in America. Language study builds understanding of the workings of a language and helps a student learn how to properly express themselves in the foreign language. Week 1 - 2: Greetings & Farewells,Times of Day, Course Introduction Weeks 3 - 5: Introductions, General Names for Persons (Frau, Herr, etc.), Expressing Feelings Weeks 6 - 8: My Class, Going to School Weeks 9 - 11: Favorite Foods, Eating & Drinking Weeks 12 - 14: Numbers, Age, Addition *IMPORTANT*: Please make sure that your student has a notebook or composition book to write in during class. This will become the students' self-made record of their learning. I will also provide downloadable activities/worksheets on Mondays. Please print them before class on Tuesdays. We will do some of the worksheet activities together in class on Tuesday and/or Thursday and some will be homework pages for students to have further practice after class. *ALSO, IMPORTANT*: Please encourage your child to try to repeat the words I speak and the actions I do during class. I will offer students opportunities to practice speaking, and/or make use of break-out rooms for this purpose, to help increase students' fluency. Copying the actions I do, along with speaking the language, helps cement learning in students' brains. Studies show that this total physical response makes learning stick.
Learning Goals
Students will learn foundational German phrases and vocabulary, be given speaking opportunities throughout class, and start the path toward fluency in German.
