Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
This class will focus on developing students' reading, writing, and grammar skills, enabling them to communicate effectively and think critically.

At the beginning of class, students will be given 2 to 3 vocabulary words to help them learn essential vocabulary skills. They will be expected to write multiple definitions for each word. Students will complete various exercises to deepen their understanding of the vocabulary words, including word association, sentence creation, and matching activities.

Students will also be given a new fiction or nonfiction story to read in each class. The text complexity, including sentence length, subject matter, and average word size, is suitable for students who read at a second and third-grade level. Stories will explore various topics in social studies, nature, history, science, and more. Students will take turns reading out loud to their peers. Reading out loud will help students improve their reading fluency, boost confidence, and strengthen active listening skills. Students will reinforce their understanding of the story by completing reading comprehension questions. Comprehension questions will include multiple-choice, sequencing events from the story, true or false statements, and responses in complete sentences.

In addition, students can enhance their grammar and mechanics skills. They will learn rules that govern the structure of a language, including sentence formation, verb tenses, parts of speech, and syntax. Students will also focus on writing mechanics, such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and formatting. Learning grammar and mechanics is crucial for producing clear, coherent, and correctly structured written work.

Students will complete the following activities for the first four weeks of class:

Week #1 (Oct 8):
Vocabulary Words: grab, class, and fell
Story: Margie Will Not Read
Introduction to Nouns: complete task cards that require students to identify the noun in the sentence.

Week #2 (Oct 15):
Vocabulary Words: shall, spell
Story: Into the Forest I Go
Cut and Glue Nouns: sort nouns as people, place, or thing

Week #3 (Oct 22)
Vocabulary Words: fill and cross
Story: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Nouns on the Farm: highlight the noun in each sentence and determine whether the noun represents a person, place, or thing.

Week#4 (Oct 29)
Vocabulary Words: other and drum
Story: The Boy From Oz
Words and Their Meaning
Word Association

All materials will be posted to the classroom the night before for students to print. Although I understand that not all students may have access to a printer, so please don't let printing issues prevent your student from joining the class. I will always display the story and worksheets on the screen for students to view. I recommend that students bring a scratch paper to write down their answers if they do not have the printout. Students can also bring one item to share at the end of class, such as a toy, pet, book, drawing, gaming device, etc.
